Honda Pilot Key Replacement: Key Types by Year
Lost or broken Honda Pilot key? In most cases a locksmith can make and program a replacement on-site, no dealership tow required. The exact key depends on which generation of Pilot you drive — here's a breakdown of the three key types and which model years use each.
The Three Pilot Key Types
1. Transponder Key
A metal key with an embedded chip that communicates with the Pilot's immobilizer. The engine won't start without the correct chip, so a replacement must be both cut and programmed to your specific vehicle.
Pilot years (confirm): Older Pilot model years typically use a transponder key. Confirm the exact year range from your shop/UHS reference before publishing.

2. Remote Head Key
Combines the transponder and remote buttons into one unit. If lost or the buttons stop working, the whole key is replaced and reprogrammed.
Pilot years (confirm): Mid-range Pilot years typically use a remote head key. Confirm exact years before publishing.

3. Smart Key (Push-to-Start)
A proximity fob that lets you unlock and start the Pilot without inserting a key. Used on newer push-button-start models and paired to the vehicle electronically.
Pilot years (confirm): Newer Pilot models with push-button start use a smart key. Confirm the start year before publishing.
