Toyota Corolla Key Replacement: Key Types by Year

Premier Locksmith TexasJune 22, 20265 min read

If you've lost the key to your Toyota Corolla or it's stopped working, you don't necessarily need to tow it to the dealership. A qualified locksmith can make and program a replacement Corolla key on-site for most years. The right key depends on which generation of Corolla you drive, so here's a breakdown of the key types and which model years use each.

The Three Corolla Key Types

1. Transponder Key

A metal key with a chip in the head that talks to the car's immobilizer. The engine won't start without the correct chip, so a replacement must be cut and programmed to your Corolla.

Corolla years (confirm): Generally older Corollas use a basic transponder key. Confirm the exact year range for Corolla from your shop/UHS reference before publishing.

2. Remote Head Key

Combines the transponder key and the remote buttons (lock, unlock, panic) into one unit. If it's lost or the buttons fail, the whole unit is replaced and reprogrammed.

Corolla years (confirm): Mid-range model years typically use a remote head key. Confirm exact years before publishing.

3. Smart Key (Push-to-Start)

A proximity fob that unlocks and starts the car without being inserted. Used on newer push-button-start Corollas. Must be paired to the vehicle electronically.

Corolla years (confirm): Newer Corollas with push-button start use a smart key. Confirm the start year before publishing.
