Toyota Highlander Key Replacement: Key Types by Year
Lost or broken Toyota Highlander key? In most cases a locksmith can make and program a replacement on-site, no dealership tow required. The exact key depends on which generation of Highlander you drive — here's a breakdown of the three key types and which model years use each.
The Three Highlander Key Types
1. Transponder Key
A metal key with an embedded chip that communicates with the Highlander's immobilizer. The engine won't start without the correct chip, so a replacement must be both cut and programmed to your specific vehicle.
Highlander years (confirm): Older Highlander model years typically use a transponder key. Confirm the exact year range from your shop/UHS reference before publishing.

2. Remote Head Key
Combines the transponder and remote buttons into one unit. If lost or the buttons stop working, the whole key is replaced and reprogrammed.
Highlander years (confirm): Mid-range Highlander years typically use a remote head key. Confirm exact years before publishing.

3. Smart Key (Push-to-Start)
A proximity fob that lets you unlock and start the Highlander without inserting a key. Used on newer push-button-start models and paired to the vehicle electronically.
Highlander years (confirm): Newer Highlander models with push-button start use a smart key. Confirm the start year before publishing.
